Turkish Tülü rug with pomegranate design (141 x 94cm)

This Turkish vintage tülü rug incoropates a design of conjoined pomegranates in red on a cream ground, framed in a narrow blue border. 

These long pile rugs are almost always restricted to small sizes of around 1.5㎡ or less and may never have been intended for the bazaar but deemed appropriate for domestic home use. The technique used is associated with Karapinar, which is some 100km east of Konya in Central Turkey. The method probably existing elsewhere in Asia Minor at some point in history. This vintage example is made in very soft wool and mohair, imparting a very lustrous handle.
